Dialogue on MDP Agricultural land use

Dialoque  Question:
Should we restrict development as outlined in the plan or prohibit development indefinitely?

Excerpts From the Plan:

Objective
5.1.2 Direct development so it is contiguous and makes efficient use of land, infrastructure, transportation networks, and other community resources.

Policies

5.1.2.2 Intensify land use and prevent the premature development or fragmentation of lands currently in agricultural use.

5.1.2.6 Prohibit permanent development and discourage temporary development on any lands not governed by an Area Structure Plan and/or zoned Urban Reserve or Agricultural Restricted.

Summary from Metro Quest

The preservation of both agricultural and natural areas in and around Spruce Grove is extremely important to
residents.... The vision preserves all of the highest quality agricultural areas and greatly minimizes development of much of the region’s green space.

Participants identified many benefits of the vision – for example, it:
• provides for local food production
• preserves agricultural land for future generations
• preserves the agricultural heritage and economy
• protects green spaces and natural areas

Comments from Metro Quest:

Great open spaces and
farmland are a big part
of our identity.
Protecting our green
spaces is critical to me.

Let’s keep our city in the
country. We could have
high-quality housing close to
amenities – and still ensure that
the farmland around the city is
protected.
